Chapter 9 - The Master Manipulator

The cold metal handcuffs clicked tightly shut around my wrists.
Margaret stood up from the floor, smoothing out her business suit with a triumphant, wicked smirk.
"I told you not to mess with my family, Claire," Margaret whispered as the officer pushed me toward the door.
She truly believed she had orchestrated the perfect crime to steal my entire life.
Daniel let out a massive sigh of relief and quickly reached for the unsigned housing documents on the table.
"Now that she is going to jail, I have the power of attorney to sign these for her," Daniel told the two men in suits.
The taller man in the suit reached into his jacket pocket, but he did not pull out a pen.
He pulled out his official FBI credentials and a heavy, government-issued firearm.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation, everybody step away from the table right now," the agent commanded in a voice like thunder.
The local police officers froze completely, their hands hovering nervously over their own weapons.
"We have a local warrant for her arrest," the corrupt local officer argued weakly.
"Your local warrant is based on a fraudulent tip, and you are currently interfering with a federal sting operation," the FBI agent fired back.
The second undercover agent pulled a small digital recorder from his pocket and pressed play.
The clear audio of Daniel confessing to his massive gambling debt and the forged notary stamp echoed through the room.
"You are all under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit real estate fraud," the lead agent announced.
Margaret's smug smirk vanished completely, replaced by absolute, unadulterated terror.
Vanessa began sobbing uncontrollably on the floor, realizing her life was entirely over.
The local police officers wisely stepped back, immediately removing the handcuffs from my wrists to avoid federal obstruction charges.
I rubbed my sore wrists and looked at Daniel, who was trembling violently near the dining table.
He realized he was going to spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary.
Daniel panicked, his eyes darting frantically around the room looking for an escape route.

He reached behind his back, wrapping his trembling fingers around the hidden gun tucked into his waistband.
"I am not going to prison for this bitch!" Daniel screamed, pulling the weapon out to fire.
