Chapter 3 - The Hidden Eyes

I slammed my laptop shut just as the bedroom door creaked open.
Daniel walked into the room carrying a pillow and a blanket under his arm.
"What do you want?" I demanded, standing up from my desk chair.
"This is my bedroom too, Claire, and I am not sleeping on the couch," he replied stubbornly.
I pointed toward the hallway with a steady hand.
"You lost the right to sleep in this room when you stole my life savings," I told him coldly.
Daniel rolled his eyes and tossed the pillow onto the expensive mattress.
"I only moved the money to a temporary holding account to protect it from taxes," he lied smoothly.
I knew he was lying because my accountant handled all of my corporate tax structures.
"Get out of my room before I scream for the police," I warned him, reaching for my phone.
Daniel glared at me for a long moment before finally backing out into the hallway.
He slammed the door violently, shaking the picture frames on the wall.
I immediately pushed a heavy wooden dresser in front of the door to barricade myself inside.
I sat back down at my desk and opened my laptop again to trace the stolen funds.
The transaction history showed a wire transfer authorized by a device I did not recognize.
Someone had cloned my digital identity to bypass the bank's security protocols.
As I stared at the screen, a strange red reflection caught my eye in the windowpane.
I turned my head slowly, scanning the dark corners of the large bedroom.
The faint red light was blinking rhythmically from inside the air conditioning vent above the bed.
My blood ran completely cold as I realized what it was.
They had installed a hidden wireless camera in my private sanctuary.
Every conversation, every password I typed, and every move I made was being watched.
I forced myself to remain completely calm and pretend I had not seen anything.
I casually stood up and stretched my arms as if I was just tired from a long day.
I walked into the master bathroom and turned on the shower to mask the sound of my voice.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the private number of my trusted banker, Richard.
"Claire, I was just about to call you because something terrible has happened," Richard whispered urgently on the other end.
