Chapter 2 - The Eviction Notice

I stared at Margaret as her horrific confession echoed through my own living room.
They had somehow bypassed the legal requirements to steal the equity out of my house.
"I want all of you out of my house within the next five minutes," I ordered with absolute authority.
Daniel stepped in front of his mother to shield her from my anger.
"You cannot kick my family out into the street just because you are throwing a tantrum," he argued.
"This is not a tantrum, this is an eviction," I corrected him sharply.
Vanessa laughed a loud, obnoxious laugh and walked over to her designer handbag.
She pulled out a thick stack of folded papers and waved them in the air like a trophy.
"You cannot evict us because we are legally protected tenants," Vanessa mocked.
I snatched the papers from her hand and quickly scanned the front page.
It was a standard residential lease agreement listing Margaret, Vanessa, and Greg as the primary tenants.
At the bottom of the last page was a perfect forgery of my signature.
"This is a fraudulent document, and I never signed it," I stated, dropping the papers on the floor.
"The local police will not care what you claim, because tenant laws protect us from immediate eviction," Daniel explained smugly.
He had actually researched the law just to figure out how to trap me in my own home.
"If you try to throw us out physically, we will call the cops and have you arrested for assault," Margaret threatened.
I realized with a sickening feeling that they had planned this invasion for months.
They knew the legal loopholes that would force me to share my space with them.
"Fine, you can stay the night, but I am calling my lawyer in the morning," I conceded carefully.
I turned around and walked up the stairs to the master bedroom, locking the heavy oak door behind me.
I needed to gather my thoughts and figure out exactly how much money they had stolen.
I opened my laptop and logged securely into my primary business banking portal.
My heart completely stopped when the account dashboard loaded on the screen.
May you like
The primary operating account for my consulting firm was completely empty.
Then, I heard the faint sound of a key turning in the lock of my bedroom door.
