Chapter 7 - The Walls Close In

The undercover FBI agent placed his coffee cup back onto the silver tray with a soft clink.

He gave me a microscopic nod of his head to signal that he understood the situation completely.

Daniel walked over to the dining table and unrolled a thick stack of legal documents.

"Let's skip the small talk and get straight to the signatures," Daniel demanded nervously.

He was sweating profusely, likely terrified of the gambling syndicate he owed money to.

"We need to verify the identity of the seller before any money changes hands," the second agent stated firmly.

Daniel grabbed my arm aggressively and practically dragged me to the wooden chair at the table.

He slammed a heavy black pen onto the documents right in front of me.

"Sign the papers right now, Claire," Daniel growled, resting his hand near the hidden gun in his waistband.

I looked down at the fraudulent contract that would transfer my entire life's work to a shell company.

I hesitated, picking up the pen and letting it hover just an inch above the signature line.

Margaret leaned over my shoulder, smelling strongly of cheap perfume and pure malice.

"If you do not sign this, I will release the deepfake videos we created of you," Margaret whispered directly into my ear.

"We will send them to every single corporate client your consulting firm has ever worked with," she threatened.

They were willing to completely destroy my professional reputation to steal my house.

Daniel laughed loudly, mistaking my silence for total submission.

"Go ahead and ruin her business, Mom, because it doesn't matter anyway," Daniel boasted arrogantly.

He pulled out his phone and waved it in my face like a victory flag.

"I cloned your phone last week, Claire, and I already emptied your primary corporate account this morning," he revealed.

He thought he had completely checkmated me in every possible direction.

He thought I was penniless, trapped, and entirely at his mercy.

I looked at Daniel, then at Margaret, and finally at Vanessa standing near the doorway.

I slowly placed the black pen back down on the table without signing a single letter.

A genuine, uncontrollable laugh escaped my lips, echoing loudly through the tense dining room.

"What is so funny, you crazy bitch?" Daniel yelled, his face turning red with sudden panic.
