Chapter 8 - The Fatal Standoff

Madison held the gun incredibly steady, her cold eyes locked intensely onto Agent Carter's face.
I leaned heavily against the mahogany doorway, my breathing becoming extremely shallow and dangerously ragged.
She aggressively demanded a private helicopter and full federal immunity in exchange for the life-saving syringe.
Carter kept his tactical weapon trained directly on her chest, his face completely rigid and unreadable.
He told her with absolute authority that the FBI never negotiates with domestic terrorists under any circumstances.
Madison laughed a hollow laugh and said I would be dead in less than ten minutes without the immediate injection.
I knew she was telling the absolute truth because my vision was already beginning to fade rapidly into blackness.
I gathered every remaining ounce of physical strength I had left and stepped bravely into the center of the room.
I told Madison that the offshore money Daniel stole from me was securely locked behind a secondary biometric firewall.
I lied straight to her face and said Daniel could not access a single penny without my living fingerprint.
Madison's confident, arrogant smile faltered for a tiny fraction of a second.
She lowered the gun slightly, completely distracted by the horrifying thought of losing the massive fortune she had plotted for.
In that brief moment of crucial hesitation, Carter lunged forward and tackled her violently to the hard marble floor.
The gun went off with a deafening bang, the stray bullet shattering a massive crystal chandelier directly above us.
I dove desperately for the syringe as it rolled across the polished floor, my hands trembling wildly in the chaos.
I grabbed the plastic barrel and immediately injected the clear liquid directly into the muscle of my thigh.
A sudden, shocking wave of ice-cold relief flooded instantly through my burning, poisoned veins.
Carter snapped heavy steel handcuffs onto Madison's wrists and pulled her forcefully up from the ground.
I collapsed safely onto my back, staring up at the broken chandelier, finally able to draw a full breath of air again.

My phone buzzed loudly in my pocket, and a horrifying breaking news alert flashed ominously across the screen.
The bright red alert stated that Jason Mitchell had just violently escaped from federal custody during his transport to a maximum-security prison.
