Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal

My mother’s face was devoid of the warm, gentle expression I had known my entire life.

She held the heavy black pistol with terrifying familiarity, keeping the barrel pressed firmly against Sabrina’s temple.

"Mom?" I whispered, my brain entirely unable to comprehend the nightmare unfolding before me.

"Stop acting so surprised, Stephanie," my mother snapped coldly.

"You always thought you were the smartest person in the room just because you married into old money."

Sabrina sobbed against her gag, her eyes pleading with me to save her from our own flesh and blood.

"Where is Dr. Thorne?" I asked, my eyes darting around the empty shadows of the warehouse.

My mother scoffed, kicking a heavy canvas tarp located a few feet to her left.

A pool of dark crimson blood was slowly seeping out from beneath the thick material.

"Dr. Thorne served his purpose by acquiring the infants, but he got greedy with his ransom demands," she explained smoothly.

"I could not let him ruin the perfect plan I spent two years building with Christopher."

The entire twisted web finally snapped into sharp, horrifying focus.

Sabrina and Christopher hadn't masterminded this betrayal alone.

My own mother had orchestrated the entire plot to steal my grandmother's trust.

"My grandmother left the estate entirely to me because she knew you had a gambling addiction," I said aloud, the old family secret tasting like ash in my mouth.

"She left me penniless!" my mother shrieked, her finger tightening on the trigger.

"I convinced Sabrina to sleep with Christopher, and I paid the clinic to fake the fertility results."

"All we needed were two heirs to legally trigger the succession clause in Christopher’s company charter."

She looked down at Sabrina with absolute disgust.

"But Sabrina is weak, and she panicked when Thorne demanded more money, threatening to expose the kidnapping."

"So now, Sabrina and the babies are going to have a tragic accident at the shipyards."

My mother smiled, aiming the gun directly at my chest.

"And you, my tragic older daughter, will die trying to heroically save them."

She planted her feet, preparing to fire the fatal shot.

Suddenly, a deafening gunshot echoed from the catwalk high above us, shattering the spotlight into a thousand pieces.

The warehouse plunged into total darkness.

"Drop the weapon, Helen!" a furious, commanding voice boomed through a police megaphone.

The FBI had not just arrived; they had surrounded the entire building.
