Chapter 1 - The Chain of Custody

The heavy oak doors of the dining room clicked shut as Christopher and my sister walked out into the cool evening air.
I remained seated at the head of the long table, staring at the divorce agreement that was supposed to end my life.
Penelope covered her face with her trembling hands, quietly sobbing into a silk napkin.
My mother refused to look at me, her silence confirming she had chosen Sabrina’s stolen happiness over my dignity.
I reached out and picked up the half-empty crystal champagne flute Christopher had just drank from.
Jacqueline, my attorney, pulled a pair of sterile latex gloves and a plastic evidence bag from her sleek leather briefcase.
She expertly sealed the glass inside the bag without leaving a single fingerprint of her own.
"The laboratory courier is waiting in the alley behind the kitchen," Jacqueline whispered.
I nodded, feeling a cold wave of adrenaline wash away eight years of misplaced guilt.
I also handed her the silver spoon Sabrina had used to eat her caviar appetizer.
"Take this one too," I instructed.
Penelope suddenly looked up, her tear-stained face twisting into a mask of pure panic.
"Stephanie, you cannot send those items to a laboratory," she pleaded.
She lunged across the table, desperately trying to snatch the plastic bags from Jacqueline’s hands.
I caught my mother-in-law's wrist mid-air, gripping it with a strength I didn't know I possessed.
"Your son just humiliated me in front of our entire family, Penelope," I said with lethal calmness.
"He paraded two infants around as trophies of my supposed infertility."
"I am simply securing the medical evidence required to prove he committed perjury on his divorce affidavit."
Penelope’s eyes darted toward the hallway where her precious son had just exited.
"If you do this, you will destroy him," she choked out.
"He destroyed himself the moment he brought another woman's children into my house," I replied.
Jacqueline slipped out the back door to hand the evidence to the waiting courier.
My phone chimed on the table with a new encrypted message.
It was from the private investigator Jacqueline had hired to follow Sabrina for the past six months.

I opened the attached file and felt my breath catch in my throat.
The photograph showed Sabrina handing a massive stack of cash to a man holding the exact same babies just two hours before the dinner.
