Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Alliance

Eleanor Vance looked at me as if I were a piece of garbage staining her expensive designer shoes.
She ignored Serena, who was currently sobbing and handcuffed on the floor.
"My son is an idiot for letting things get this chaotic, but I am here to clean it up," Eleanor announced coldly.
"You will sign a non-disclosure agreement, take ten million dollars, and walk away from this city," she ordered.
"I am never leaving my daughter," I spat back, refusing to be intimidated by her wealth.
Eleanor sighed dramatically, pulling a small silver remote from her trench coat pocket.
"Your daughter is currently in an incubator that is connected to a remote power grid," Eleanor threatened softly.
"One press of this button, and the oxygen supply stops," she stated, her eyes dead and merciless.
My heart hammered in my chest as I realized the depths of the Vance family's pure, unadulterated evil.
Caleb stepped forward slowly, raising his hands in a placating gesture.
"Eleanor, there are federal agents right outside this door," Caleb warned her nervously.
"I own the federal agents, you foolish boy," Eleanor sneered, not even bothering to look at him.
Suddenly, Sarah pushed her way through the crowd of guards at the door, clutching a thick legal briefcase.
"You might own the agents, Eleanor, but you don't own the SEC," Sarah declared triumphantly.
Eleanor's smug expression faltered slightly at the mention of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
"I just filed the whistleblower reports detailing your fifty-million-dollar Medicare fraud scheme," Sarah announced loudly.
The room fell completely silent as the gravity of Sarah's words settled over the powerful matriarch.
"If that baby's incubator shuts off, the entire world will know it was a desperate murder to cover your financial crimes," Sarah bluffed flawlessly.

Eleanor slowly lowered the silver remote, her aristocratic face contorting into a mask of pure hatred.
"You may have won the battle, but my son is currently standing inside the NICU with a sledgehammer," Eleanor whispered.
