Chapter 1 - The Echoes of Betrayal

The ambulance tires screeched as we tore away from the luxury maternity center.
Every jolt of the vehicle sent a fresh wave of agony through my lower body.
Caleb, the nurse who had risked his career to come with me, kept desperate pressure on my hemorrhage.
The metallic smell of blood filled the cramped space, mixing with my terrified tears.
I stared at the monitor, watching my unborn daughter's heart rate drop to terrifyingly low numbers.
My mind kept replaying the image of my husband holding his ex-girlfriend's baby for the flashing cameras.
Ethan had looked so incredibly proud, completely unfazed by the fact that he had just signed my death warrant.
He had taken every single medical professional in the building just to ensure Serena's comfort during a routine delivery.
"Stay with me, stay with me!" Caleb shouted, his hands trembling violently against my abdomen.
The paramedic injected something icy into my IV line, his face pale with utter panic.
"We are losing her blood pressure, step on it!" the paramedic yelled to the driver.
I tried to speak, to beg them to save my little girl no matter what happened to me.
But my throat felt like it was packed with dry, suffocating cotton.
The edges of my vision began to darken, framing Caleb's terrified face in a tunnel of black.
I thought of the five years of marriage I had wasted on a man who never truly loved me.
I thought of the nursery I had painted yellow, waiting for a baby who might never see it.
A sudden, piercing alarm echoed through the small cabin, shattering my thoughts.
It was the fetal monitor, and the rhythmic beeping had transformed into a solid, horrific drone.

"We lost the baby's pulse!" Caleb screamed in horror.
Before I could even process the crushing grief, the darkness completely consumed me.
