Chapter 8 - The Cabin in the Woods

The managing partner weakly grabbed my arm, his hands trembling violently.

"Vanessa isn't my daughter, she is a vicious cartel fixer Ethan hired after he secretly committed me here," he explained.

I promised to send the real authorities for him, then sprinted completely out of the horrible facility.

I drove the stolen delivery van recklessly toward the distant mountains where Ethan kept his remote hunting cabin.

A massive thunderstorm had rolled in, making the treacherous dirt roads nearly entirely impassable.

I arrived at the edge of the dark woods and carefully approached the cabin on foot through the freezing mud.

I peered through the living room window and finally saw my brother, David, completely tied to a wooden chair.

Ethan was standing directly over him, casually pointing a suppressed pistol at my brother's head.

I couldn't wait for a better opportunity, knowing Ethan could pull the trigger at any second.

I kicked the front door open violently, aiming a bright orange flare gun I had found in the van directly at Ethan's chest.

Ethan didn't flinch; instead, he threw his head back and laughed uncontrollably.

"You are incredibly predictable, Claire, and entirely out of options," he mocked me loudly.

He gestured confidently toward the large window facing the long dirt driveway.

Bright red and blue police lights began flashing intensely through the heavy rain, completely surrounding the entire cabin.

"I tipped off the local police that the dangerous fugitive who murdered Mark was hiding out here," Ethan smiled.

He cocked his pistol, perfectly ready to play the traumatized victim for the arriving officers.

"Checkmate, sweetheart," he whispered cruelly.

The front door suddenly swung open wider, and a tall man wearing a standard police uniform stepped calmly inside.

He slowly removed his waterproof uniform hat, revealing a face I thought I would never see again.

It was my attorney, Mark, looking entirely unharmed and furious.

"Not quite, Ethan," Mark said, raising his own service weapon.
