Chapter 4 - The Voice of the Dead

I stared at the ringing phone, completely paralyzed by the sheer impossibility of the situation.
I slowly picked up the cheap device and pressed it tightly against my ear.
"David?" I whispered, my voice cracking under the immense weight of my grief and confusion.
"You need to listen to me very carefully, Claire," the familiar, deep voice replied.
Hot tears streamed down my face as I heard my beloved brother speak for the first time in three years.
"Ethan rigged my boat to explode so he could steal my share of the company," David explained rapidly.
"I survived, but I've had to stay completely off the grid because he controls the local police."
"How did you know I would come to this specific bank vault today?" I asked, looking nervously around the empty room.
"Because I stole the trust documents last night to keep them completely out of Ethan's hands," he said.
"Where are you right now?" I demanded, desperate to see him with my own eyes.
"That doesn't matter right now, what matters is that Ethan's men just walked into the bank lobby."
I gasped, peering cautiously around the corner of the heavy steel vault door.
Two massive men in dark suits were aggressively questioning the terrified bank manager at the front desk.
"There is a secondary emergency exit located behind the main server room on your left," David instructed.
"Take it right now, Claire, and absolutely do not look back."
The line went dead, leaving me in total, suffocating silence.
I slipped out of my high heels and sprinted silently across the polished marble floor.
I found the heavy metal door David had mentioned and shoved it open with all my remaining strength.
I tumbled out into a narrow, filthy alleyway filled with overflowing dumpsters.
I ran blindly toward the main street, hoping to disappear into the morning commuter crowd.
Suddenly, a massive black SUV accelerated out of a side street and aggressively blocked my path.
The tinted passenger window slowly rolled down, revealing the very last person I expected to see.

Vanessa was sitting in the driver's seat, looking completely terrified and desperately pale.
"Get in the car right now if you want to live," she screamed over the roaring engine.
