Chapter 1 - The Hidden Document

I stared at the leather briefcase dangling from Vanessa's perfectly manicured hand.

The freezing rain continued to pound against the dark pavement.

But I could no longer feel the biting cold seeping through my coat.

All I felt was a sudden, terrifying spike of pure adrenaline.

My maiden name was printed in bold, undeniable block letters across the top of that thick legal document.

Ethan followed my gaze and his confident posture completely crumbled.

He lunged awkwardly toward his mistress, desperately trying to shield the unfastened pocket from my view.

"Get back inside the lobby right now," he snapped at Vanessa.

She froze on the sidewalk, entirely confused by the sudden panic in his voice.

"Ethan, what is going on out here?" she asked, stepping away from him.

I didn't wait for him to construct another flawless lie.

I stepped forward and snatched the thick parchment straight out of the briefcase.

Ethan grabbed my wrist with a grip that was entirely meant to hurt me.

"Give that back to me immediately, Claire," he demanded through gritted teeth.

"Or what?" I challenged, violently ripping my arm away from his grasp.

I took three steps backward into the empty street, unfolding the damp papers under the amber glow of the streetlight.

It wasn't a prenuptial agreement, and it certainly wasn't a standard corporate merger contract.

It was an emergency petition for an involuntary psychiatric conservatorship.

Ethan had spent the last six months secretly documenting completely fabricated mental breakdowns under my name.

He had heavily bribed a private psychiatrist to sign an affidavit declaring me a severe danger to myself.

He wasn't just planning to walk away with half of our marital assets.

He was planning to lock me inside a mental facility and seize total control of the tech empire my late father had left me.

Vanessa let out a sharp, horrified gasp from the sidewalk.

"You told me she had already signed the life insurance transfer," she whispered in absolute shock.

Ethan spun around, his carefully crafted professional mask slipping completely off his face.

I looked down at the horrifying document again, my blood running completely cold.

The petition wasn't just signed by a corrupt medical doctor.

It already possessed the fresh signature of a superior court judge authorizing my immediate, forceful detainment.

And before I could even process the reality of my situation, the deafening wail of an approaching siren turned the corner.

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated Ethan's cruel, victorious smile.

The vehicle rushing toward us wasn't a police cruiser at all.

It was a private psychiatric transport van, and it was accelerating straight toward me.
