Chapter 8 - The Decoy Account

I stood in the aisle of the luxurious private jet and looked down at my incredibly smug husband.

Eric casually held up his phone, displaying the confirmation message from the offshore bank in the Cayman Islands.

"I secured the money, and since we are still legally married, you cannot testify against me in a federal court," Eric bragged confidently.

The federal agents standing around us looked grim, knowing the stolen funds were likely untouchable now.

I slowly smiled, a genuine, terrifying smile that completely erased the arrogant smirk from Eric's bruised face.

"You really think you are the smartest person in the room, Eric," I said calmly.

"But you fundamentally misunderstood exactly who you were married to for fifteen years."

I pulled my own phone from my pocket and opened my secure corporate banking application.

"When you sent me that pathetic text message from Las Vegas, I did not just freeze your credit cards," I explained softly.

"I logged into my company's main server and initiated a catastrophic security protocol on my own administrative tokens."

Eric frowned, a flicker of genuine panic finally showing in his eyes.

"What are you talking about?" he demanded, his voice losing its confident edge.

"I flagged my own profile for critical compromise," I continued, holding my phone up so he could see the screen.

"When you tried to wire five million dollars to the Cayman Islands using my compromised credentials, the system automatically intercepted the transaction."

I pressed a single button on my screen, releasing the security hold.

"The money never left the United States, Eric."

"It was routed directly into a secure federal escrow account designed specifically to trap corporate embezzlers."

Eric stared at my phone in absolute, unmitigated horror as the reality of his failure crushed him.

"No," Eric whispered frantically, furiously tapping the screen of his own device.

"The offshore account balance is completely zero," I confirmed with total satisfaction.

The lead federal agent placed a heavy hand onto Eric's shoulder and pulled him roughly out of the expensive leather seat.

"Eric Dawson, you are under arrest for massive federal wire fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit extortion," the agent announced loudly.

They slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists and dragged him down the aisle of the airplane.

As he walked past me, completely broken and defeated, I leaned in closely.

"You liked being admired, Eric," I whispered into his ear.

"But I always liked being underestimated."

Eric was shoved into the back of a federal transport vehicle right next to my weeping mother.

Vanessa was left completely stranded in Las Vegas with no money, no passport, and a fraudulent marriage certificate that annulled instantly.

I was completely cleared of all charges, retained full ownership of my home, and received a massive promotion to Vice President of Purchasing at my firm.

I had successfully defended my life, destroyed my enemies, and finally found total peace.

A month later, I was sitting on my front porch, enjoying a glass of expensive red wine in the quiet afternoon breeze.

A sleek, heavily tinted black town car slowly pulled into my driveway and parked smoothly near the sidewalk.

A tall woman in an elegant designer suit stepped out of the vehicle, holding the hand of a quiet little boy who possessed Eric's exact gray eyes.

"Eric sent me," the strange woman said, walking up the steps and handing me a sealed, heavy legal envelope.

"He said you are the absolute only person who can afford to pay the ransom."
