Chapter 4 - The Frame Job

I stood up slowly, raising my hands to show I was not a threat.
"David, you have to listen to me," I pleaded urgently.
"My husband stole my authentication drive and initiated that five million dollar transfer from Las Vegas."
David shook his head in absolute disgust.
"Eric called me an hour ago to warn me about your crimes," David said coldly.
"He told me you were planning to steal the money and frame him."
"He even provided me with a recorded phone call of you threatening to ruin his life."
I felt a cold wave of realization wash over my entire body.
Eric had meticulously staged every single piece of this elaborate puzzle to make me look like a bitter, vindictive criminal.
"He is lying, David," I insisted fiercely.
"He sent me a text message at three in the morning bragging about marrying my younger sister."
David crossed his arms, looking at me with pure pity.
"Eric warned me you would use the Vegas wedding as an excuse to discredit his whistleblowing," David replied.
The corporate security guards stepped forward and roughly grabbed my arms.
"We traced the IP address that authorized the wire transfer, Claire," David explained as they pulled me toward the door.
"The transfer was not authorized from a hotel room in Las Vegas."
"It was authorized from the primary desktop computer inside your own house."
My mind raced as I desperately tried to process the impossible information.
If Eric was in Las Vegas with Vanessa, he could not have authorized the transfer from my home computer.
Unless someone else was inside my house helping him commit the massive fraud.
"You have twenty minutes to collect your personal belongings before the federal agents arrive," David stated bluntly.
I did not bother collecting my things.
I broke free from the guards and sprinted toward the emergency exit stairwell.
I had to get back to my house immediately to find out who was using my computer.
I drove home like a maniac, tires screeching as I pulled into my driveway.
I ran to my front porch and jammed my new key into the deadbolt.

Before I could turn the lock, the heavy wooden door violently exploded outward, knocking me backward into the grass.
A team of heavily armed police officers stormed out of my house with their weapons drawn.
