Chapter 6 - The Mother of All Betrayals

The walls of the interrogation room seemed to spin violently around me.

My own mother had signed a sworn police statement claiming I violently beat my husband.

"My mother is lying to protect him," I said, my voice trembling with unprecedented rage.

"She has always favored Vanessa, and she is helping them steal my life."

Detective Miller rolled his eyes, clearly unimpressed by my desperate defense.

"Mothers do not usually help frame their own daughters for violent felonies," he stated bluntly.

"You are going to prison for a very long time, Claire."

I closed my eyes, forcing my panicked brain to slow down and analyze the situation logically.

Eric claimed I beat him with a golf club inside our house before he fled to Vegas.

But I remembered a small, crucial detail that Eric had completely forgotten about.

Two years ago, when we briefly fostered a highly anxious rescue dog, I installed a hidden nanny camera in the living room ceiling.

Eric never knew about the tiny camera because I hid it inside the casing of the smoke detector.

The camera recorded directly to a secure, private cloud server that I paid for entirely on my own.

"I have video evidence," I announced, opening my eyes and glaring confidently at the detective.

Detective Miller paused, looking slightly uncertain for the first time since he walked into the room.

"I want my lawyer, and I want a laptop with internet access immediately," I demanded.

An hour later, my ruthlessly aggressive defense attorney, Sarah, arrived at the precinct.

She bullied the detective into providing a secure laptop, and I quickly logged into my hidden cloud server.

I pulled up the living room footage from the afternoon before Eric sent the Vegas text message.

Sarah and the detective watched the screen in absolute, stunned silence.

The high-definition video clearly showed Eric standing perfectly unharmed in the middle of our living room.

He grabbed his own golf club and brutally smashed it against his own arm until the bone audibly snapped.

But the most horrifying part of the video was the other person standing in the room.

My mother was calmly wiping the bloody golf club with a towel before placing it carefully into a plastic bag.

"She helped him stage the entire crime scene," Sarah said, her voice dripping with absolute disgust.

Detective Miller turned completely pale, realizing he had arrested the wrong person.

His radio suddenly crackled with an urgent dispatch from the federal authorities.

"Detective, the FBI just flagged Eric Dawson's passport," the radio announced loudly.

"He and an older female suspect just boarded a private charter flight bound for the Cayman Islands."
