Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

I froze behind a rusted metal crate, completely stunned by the bizarre scene unfolding on the pier.
Agnes had somehow arrived at the docks before us, and she looked absolutely furious.
She screamed at Julian, demanding that he hand over the digital token immediately.
Julian looked at his mother with a mixture of betrayal and pathetic fear.
He whined that they were supposed to share the money and escape to South America together.
Agnes laughed coldly, stating that she had never intended to share a single penny with her incompetent son.
She revealed that she had secretly booked only one ticket on the smuggling vessel, planning to leave him behind to take the fall.
Julian’s face crumpled as he realized the woman who had orchestrated this entire nightmare did not care about him at all.
He gripped the digital token tighter, stepping backward dangerously close to the edge of the dark, freezing water.
He threatened to throw the token into the ocean, destroying the only way to access the stolen millions.
Agnes did not blink, her finger tightening slowly on the trigger of her silver handgun.
She told him that the cartel running the smuggling vessel would kill them both if they didn't pay for passage.
I stepped out from behind the metal crate, refusing to let them destroy the wealth that belonged to my daughter.
I shouted at Julian, telling him that federal agents had already seized the estate and his uncle’s assets.
I lied, telling him that Mr. Sterling had frozen the receiving accounts, rendering the token completely useless anyway.
Julian hesitated, his eyes darting frantically between my confident stare and his mother’s deadly weapon.
That momentary distraction was exactly what my father’s lead security agent needed.
The agent fired a precise, non-lethal rubber round from his rifle, striking Agnes squarely in the shoulder.
She shrieked and dropped the gun, collapsing onto the wet wooden planks of the pier.
Julian panicked, stumbling backward in terror as the security team rushed forward to apprehend him.

His foot slipped on a patch of slick algae, and he fell backward off the edge of the dock.
He hit the freezing, pitch-black water with a loud splash, taking the master token down with him.
