Chapter 5 - The Mastermind

Agnes did not look like a panicked woman catching an intruder in her bedroom.

She looked entirely calm, holding the weapon with a steady, practiced hand.

She ordered me to drop the vial onto the carpet and step away from the bed.

I held the glass vial tightly against my chest, refusing to let go of my daughter’s only hope for an antidote.

Agnes laughed lightly, a cold, empty sound that sent shivers down my spine.

She confessed that Julian was too weak and foolish to orchestrate a hostile takeover of the Mercer Trust.

She was the one who forged my signature, hired the mercenaries, and paid off the local judge.

She explained that she had grown tired of living in a house she did not legally own, bowing to a daughter-in-law she despised.

She raised the gun slightly, aiming it directly at my face.

She told me she was going to shoot me and claim it was self-defense against an unstable mother.

I knew I could not outrun a bullet, but I also knew Agnes was incredibly vain about her appearance.

I hurled the heavy iron crowbar not at her, but directly into the massive, antique vanity mirror beside her.

The glass shattered outward with a deafening crash, sending hundreds of sharp shards flying into the air.

Agnes shrieked and instinctively covered her face with her arms, dropping the gun to the floor.

I lunged forward, kicking the weapon under the bed and shoving her hard against the wall.

I ran out of the bedroom and sprinted down the grand staircase, clutching the green vial in my sweating hand.

I burst through the front doors, expecting to find the mercenaries guarding the ambulance.

Instead, the driveway was a scene of absolute chaos and violence.

My father had not waited for me to save the day.

He had used his own hidden satellite phone to call in a private security team of his own.

Men in black tactical gear were fiercely wrestling Julian’s mercenaries to the ground on the concrete driveway.

I ran straight toward the ambulance, where my father was frantically performing CPR on my tiny, unconscious daughter.
