Chapter 2 - The Blocked Exit

The heavy steel gates groaned as they locked into place, trapping the ambulance in the driveway.
The paramedics frantically honked the horn, but the reinforced metal did not budge.
Julian stood on the porch, casually tossing the security token from hand to hand.
He announced that nobody was leaving until I signed a document legally transferring the trust into his name.
My father pulled out his phone to call the police, but the screen showed absolutely no signal.
Julian had activated a military-grade signal jammer hidden somewhere on the property.
Agnes smirked, crossing her arms as she watched my daughter whimper in the back of the ambulance.
She told me to stop being stubborn and sign the papers before the child suffered brain damage from the fever.
I realized with horrifying clarity that they had planned this extortion exactly for this moment.
My father whispered for me to stay calm while he went to the ambulance to speak with the medics.
He returned a moment later, his face pale and tight with suppressed rage.
The paramedics had managed to hook Lily up to an IV, but they needed hospital equipment immediately.
They quietly told my father that Lily’s symptoms did not match a standard viral fever.
Her heart rate was dropping rapidly, and her veins were showing a strange, dark discoloration.
I turned to look at Agnes, remembering the special herbal tea she had insisted on giving Lily that afternoon.
Agnes simply smiled, adjusting her diamond necklace without an ounce of guilt.
I knew I had to get those gates open right now, or my daughter would not survive the night.
I walked toward Julian, keeping my hands raised as if I were finally surrendering.
He held out a pen and a crumpled legal document, his eyes shining with greedy triumph.
I reached for the pen, but instead, I grabbed his wrist and twisted it backward with all my strength.
Julian screamed in pain, dropping the security token onto the concrete driveway.
I kicked the token toward my father, who immediately scooped it up and pressed the release button.

The massive steel gates slowly began to swing open, revealing the dark road ahead.
But as the ambulance engine roared to life, three black unmarked SUVs swerved into the driveway, blocking our only exit completely.
