Chapter 6 - The Race Against Time

I climbed into the back of the ambulance, shoving the green vial directly into the paramedic’s trembling hands.

The medic quickly analyzed the liquid, recognizing it as a rare, highly toxic botanical extract.

He grabbed a syringe from his emergency kit, loaded it with a broad-spectrum counteragent, and injected it into Lily’s IV line.

My father backed away, his face pale and covered in sweat as we watched the heart monitor beep erratically.

Outside, the sounds of shouting and fighting began to slowly die down.

My father’s private security team had successfully subdued Julian’s hired thugs, zip-tying their wrists behind their backs.

Mr. Sterling appeared at the doors of the ambulance, looking severely bruised but entirely focused.

He informed us that he had finally managed to contact a federal prosecutor who was outside of the local judge’s jurisdiction.

Federal agents were already on their way to raid the estate and arrest everyone involved in the extortion plot.

I held Lily’s tiny, cold hand, praying to any listening god that the antidote would work in time.

Slowly, the terrifyingly pale color of her lips began to fade, replaced by a faint, healthy pink.

Her breathing steadied, and the burning heat of her fever started to break against my skin.

I collapsed against the wall of the ambulance, tears of absolute relief streaming down my face.

My father hugged me tightly, whispering that the worst of the nightmare was finally over.

Suddenly, a loud, roaring engine shattered the brief moment of peace.

Julian had somehow slipped past the security team during the chaotic brawl.

He was behind the wheel of my father’s armored SUV, accelerating blindly across the perfectly manicured lawn.

He smashed through the heavy iron side gates, tearing out into the dark, winding mountain road.

Julian was escaping with the digital token that controlled the stolen eight million dollars.

But as I looked down at the floor of the ambulance, my heart stopped completely.

Lily’s favorite stuffed bear, which she had been holding just moments before, was missing.
