Chapter 3 - The Corrupt Badge

I clamped my hand tightly over my mouth to silence the gasp that tried to escape my throat.
The sudden dizziness and metallic taste I had experienced during dinner were not from stress or bad wine.
My own husband and mother-in-law had actively poisoned my food, hoping to render me helpless before throwing me out of the house.
I blindly navigated the dusty, narrow walls of the hidden corridor, using the faint moonlight seeping through the ventilation grates to guide my steps.
My limbs were already beginning to feel heavy and lethargic as the paralytic drug slowly worked its way through my bloodstream.
I finally reached a small, grated vent that looked directly down into the grand foyer of the mansion.
Through the metal slats, I watched as two uniformed police officers walked through the front doors.
Daniel immediately put on his best acting performance, crying hysterically and clutching his chest as he ran toward them.
He claimed that I had suffered a severe psychotic break, attacked him without warning, and run off into the night with a weapon.
I waited for the officers to ask questions or demand to see the security footage that would easily prove he was lying.

Instead, the older police officer smiled warmly and placed a comforting hand on Daniel's shoulder.
The officer told Daniel not to worry about the paperwork, assuring him that they would shoot the crazy woman on sight to protect him.
