Chapter 10 - The Reclaiming

Daniel screamed in absolute, unfiltered rage and raised the heavy shotgun to blow my head off.
Before he could pull the trigger, the massive glass windows of the grand foyer shattered inward simultaneously.
A dozen heavily armed FBI tactical agents swarmed into the room, laser sights immediately locking onto Daniel's chest.
Marcus walked calmly through the front door behind them, holding a damp cloth to his bleeding head and smiling slightly.
He had regained consciousness and used his hidden satellite phone to call in the federal cavalry while we were driving back.
Daniel dropped the shotgun and fell to his knees, sobbing pathetically as the agents aggressively forced him into heavy steel handcuffs.
Patricia tried to run toward the back door, but an agent tackled her to the ground, reading her rights as she screamed obscenities.
Victoria Vance slowly raised her hands in surrender, giving me one final, respectful nod before she was taken away to face her own extensive charges.
By the time the sun began to rise over the mountains, the corrupt local police had been arrested, and my estate was completely secured.
I stood on the grand balcony with Marcus, sipping a beautiful glass of vintage red wine and watching the police cars finally drive away.
I had successfully defended my family's legacy, removed the toxic parasites from my life, and reclaimed my absolute independence.
Later that evening, I walked into my pristine master bedroom, finally ready to sleep peacefully for the first time in five years.
I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw a completely black, unmarked envelope resting precisely in the center of my pillow.

I tore it open to find a faded, five-year-old photograph of Marcus warmly shaking hands with Victoria Vance outside a courthouse.
Written on the back in my late father's unmistakable handwriting were the terrifying words, "You trusted the wrong lawyer."
