Chapter 2 - The Secret Passage

My blood ran completely cold as the terrifying reality of my husband's grand plan finally clicked into place.
He did not want to divorce me and fight over the estate in a messy, public legal battle.
He wanted me to suffer a tragic accident tonight so he could inherit absolutely everything as my grieving widower.
The heavy oak door of the study began to splinter and crack under the immense force of Daniel's relentless kicking.
I knew the antique wooden frame would not hold him back for more than a few minutes.
I rushed over to the towering mahogany bookcase that covered the entire back wall of the ancestral study.
My grandfather had built this mansion during a very turbulent era, and he always valued having a quiet way out of a dangerous room.
I reached behind a hollowed-out copy of a classic novel and pressed my thumb against a hidden biometric scanner.
A silent mechanical click echoed from within the wall, and the heavy bookcase smoothly swung open to reveal a dark, narrow corridor.
I stepped into the pitch-black passage and pulled the bookcase shut just as the main study door violently exploded inward.
I held my breath in the darkness, listening through the thin walls as Daniel aggressively tore the room apart looking for me.

Patricia walked into the study a moment later, her voice perfectly calm and laced with venom.
She asked Daniel if he was absolutely sure he had given me the correct dose of the paralytic poison during dinner.
