Chapter 9 - The Standoff

David brazenly used my pregnant body as a human shield, laughing coldly at the massive SWAT team assembled securely outside.

“If anyone out there takes a shot, my lovely wife takes the fall!” he yelled out into the flashing lights.

The disciplined police officers lowered their tactical rifles slightly, visibly terrified of hitting me or my unborn child in the crossfire.

A final, agonizing contraction seized my entire body, and I let out an involuntary, ear-piercing scream of absolute pain.

My exhausted legs buckled completely beneath me, but David held me up forcefully by the torn collar of my ruined dress.

“Stand up, you weak bitch,” he growled directly into my ear, completely oblivious to the fact that I was actively giving birth.

The lead negotiator on the megaphone begged David repeatedly to at least let tactical paramedics inside to safely deliver the baby.

David refused without hesitation, loudly claiming we were all going to walk out to a helicopter or we were all going to die right here.

My vision blurred heavily as the physical pain became completely unbearable, and I distinctly felt the baby beginning to crown.

I realized in that terrifying, helpless moment that David would much rather kill us both than ever go back to federal prison.

He raised his heavy shotgun with one hand, aiming it directly at the lead negotiator standing exposed by the patrol cars.

“You have exactly ten seconds to get me a chopper, or I start dropping cops!” David screamed at the top of his lungs.

He began to count down loudly from ten, his finger visibly tightening on the sensitive trigger.

Behind him, silently hidden in the dark shadows of the ruined cabin, Wyatt’s bloody hand reached out and firmly grasped a massive shard of broken glass.
