Chapter 6 - The Chase

I screamed for Wyatt to look at the horrifying photograph and check his rearview mirror.

A massive black SUV had completely turned off its headlights and was expertly tailing us in the pitch-black darkness of the winding road.

Wyatt violently slammed his heavy work boot onto the gas pedal, causing the old truck's engine to roar in angry protest.

We careened wildly around a sharp mountain bend, the worn tires squealing loudly against the slick, rain-slicked asphalt.

The silent SUV suddenly accelerated, aggressively ramming its heavy reinforced grill into our back bumper with bone-jarring force.

My seatbelt dug painfully into my chest as I wrapped my arms protectively around my unborn child to shield her from the impact.

“Hold on tightly!” Wyatt yelled, yanking the steering wheel hard to the left without any warning.

We tore recklessly onto an unpaved, abandoned logging road, kicking up a massive, blinding cloud of dust and sharp gravel behind us.

The heavy SUV struggled to maintain its traction on the loose, shifting dirt, fishtailing wildly toward the edge of a steep drop-off.

Wyatt slammed on the brakes, brilliantly forcing the pursuing vehicle to swerve violently and crash head-on into a massive, unyielding pine tree.

Thick black smoke billowed instantly from the crumpled hood of the wrecked SUV as we sped away deeper into the thick forest.

We finally reached the hidden cabin, a small, weathered wooden structure completely off the grid and surrounded by towering trees.

I collapsed heavily onto the dusty fabric sofa inside, breathing in ragged gasps as cold sweat drenched my pale face.

Wyatt locked the heavy iron deadbolts and immediately began boarding up the glass windows with old, rotting lumber he found in the corner.

“We are perfectly safe here for now,” he assured me in a low voice, handing me a plastic bottle of warm water.

I took a grateful sip, but my tired eyes suddenly caught sight of something absolutely impossible resting on the cabin's kitchen table.

It was a fourteen-dollar baby blanket, exactly identical to the one I had tried to buy at the supermarket just hours ago.
