Chapter 3 - The Safe Room

The private hospital room smelled heavily of industrial bleach and sterile cotton sheets.

I woke up to the steady, reassuring thump of my baby’s heartbeat echoing rhythmically from the digital monitor beside my bed.

A kind nurse smiled down at me, warmly assuring me that my baby girl had fully stabilized, though I was now placed on strict, mandatory bed rest.

The overwhelming relief was instantaneous, but it was immediately shattered by a heavy, urgent knock on my solid wooden door.

Wyatt walked into the room, his massive arm secured in a white medical sling, wearing a fresh shirt but looking deeply, fundamentally exhausted.

I thanked him profusely for saving my life, hot tears welling in my eyes as I remembered his incredible bravery in the face of a loaded gun.

He simply shook his head, pulling up a plastic chair beside my hospital bed and leaning in uncomfortably close.

“You need to check yourself out of this hospital tonight,” Wyatt whispered, checking the empty hallway nervously before shutting the door tight.

He quickly explained that David, or rather Arthur, had already posted a massive, anonymous cash bail and was walking completely free.

“How is that legally possible for an armed assault and attempted murder on police officers?” I asked, my voice rising in utter panic.

Wyatt handed me a printed news article from exactly ten years ago, folded neatly into a small, worn square.

The shocking headline detailed the mysterious disappearance of a Seattle tech billionaire named Arthur Vance, who vanished after a massive, bloody embezzlement scandal.

“He didn’t just steal corporate money, Maya,” Wyatt said gravely, his eyes locked onto mine.

“He stole directly from a ruthless cartel, and the people he owes money to just found out he’s alive because of that viral scene at the store.”

My heart hammered painfully against my ribs as I realized my simple fourteen-dollar blanket purchase had blown his decade-long, carefully crafted cover.

That was the real reason he had completely lost his mind over a few measly dollars being tracked on a joint credit card.

Wyatt reached into his pocket and handed me a cheap burner phone along with a set of brass keys to his sister's remote cabin in the mountains.

Just as my fingers brushed the cold metal of the keys, the hospital fire alarm began to blare a deafening, terrifying warning.

The friendly nurse from earlier rushed back in, her face completely drained of color, shouting that the front security desk had just been violently breached by armed men.
