Chapter 8 - The Hostage

David stepped casually over the shattered wooden remains of the front door, his furious eyes locked exclusively on Wyatt.
“You really thought you could trap me so easily, you stupid giant?” David spat, loudly cocking the heavy shotgun.
Wyatt did not flinch in the slightest, smoothly pulling a heavy, suppressed pistol from his waistband with terrifying, lightning-fast speed.
Deafening gunfire erupted instantly inside the small cabin, chaotic and blinding in the dim light.
I crawled desperately behind a heavy, overturned oak bookshelf, clutching my stomach protectively as the baby kicked violently against my ribs.
Wood splintered violently just inches above my head as stray bullets effortlessly tore through the thin walls and cheap furniture.
I heard a remarkably heavy thud, closely followed by the sickening sound of a grown man gasping desperately for air.
Peeking carefully around the shattered edge of the bookshelf, I saw Wyatt lying flat on the floor, clutching a rapidly bleeding wound on his chest.
David was bleeding profusely as well, his left shoulder heavily grazed, but he was still remarkably standing on his own two feet.
He walked slowly and purposefully toward my pathetic hiding spot, his heavy boots crunching loudly on the broken window glass.
He reached down brutally, grabbing me by a handful of my hair and hauling my heavy body forcefully to my feet.
“This entire mess is completely your fault, Maya,” he hissed, pressing the boiling hot barrel of the gun directly against my spine.
Suddenly, the high-pitched, unmistakable screech of police sirens pierced the previously quiet mountain night.
Flashes of aggressive red and blue lights illuminated the bullet-riddled windows from every possible angle.
A loud police megaphone clicked on just outside, the authoritative voice echoing clearly through the surrounding trees.

“Arthur Vance, drop your weapon and come out slowly with your hands up!”
David tightened his bruising grip on my neck and dragged me violently toward the broken window to face the waiting army of police.
