Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

I stared blankly at the folded baby blanket, my blood running significantly colder than the freezing mountain air outside.
“Where exactly did you get that?” I asked, my trembling voice barely rising above a frightened whisper.
Wyatt slowly stopped hammering the heavy wooden boards over the window and turned around to face me.
The gentle, fiercely protective demeanor he had carried since the supermarket incident vanished completely, replaced by something cold and calculating.
“I bought it today,” he said smoothly, his voice entirely flat and devoid of any human emotion.
“Arthur is a monster, Maya, but he unfortunately owes my employers fifty million dollars.”
My exhausted mind reeled as the horrible, inescapable truth finally snapped perfectly into place.
Wyatt was not Arthur’s grieving brother-in-law, and he had absolutely not stepped in to save me out of the goodness of his heart.
He was a highly trained cartel tracker, stationed locally at the supermarket merely to confirm Arthur's true identity.
“You purposely used me as bait,” I gasped, backing away slowly toward the barricaded front door.
“He ran like a coward when the cops came, but I knew he would eventually track you down to silence you,” Wyatt explained coldly.
“He is coming to this exact location right now, and when he arrives, my tactical team will finally collect his long overdue debt.”
Another vicious contraction ripped through my abdomen, so overwhelmingly intense that my shaking knees completely buckled.
I hit the dusty wooden floor hard, crying out in shock as a massive pool of warm fluid completely soaked through my dress.
My water had definitively broken, signaling that the baby was coming right now, ready or not.

Before Wyatt could say another chilling word, the solid wooden front door of the cabin exploded inward in a massive shower of jagged splinters.
David stood menacingly in the ruined doorway, holding a tactical shotgun, his once-polished smile permanently replaced by a savage, murderous snarl.
