Chapter 9 - The Classified Dossier
I covered my mouth with both hands to completely muffle my terrified sobs.
The single gunshot rang in my ears like a death knell for the brave old medic.
I crawled desperately through the thick, wet mud of the cornfield, ignoring the sharp leaves slicing my skin.
I heard Daniel screaming furious orders at his armed mercenaries.
"Burn the cabin to the ground and find her in the fields!" Daniel commanded ruthlessly.
I crept silently toward the edge of the property line where the mercenaries had parked their vehicles.
One of the massive black SUVs was left idling quietly near the broken wooden fence.
The driver had joined the assault, leaving the vehicle completely empty.
I slipped out of the corn stalks and climbed quickly into the driver's seat.
I locked the heavy steel doors and threw the transmission into drive.
I slammed my foot onto the gas pedal, crashing violently through the remaining pieces of the wooden fence.
Daniel ran out of the cabin just in time to see me escaping.
He raised an automatic weapon and fired wildly at the fleeing vehicle.
Bullets shattered the side mirrors and pinged aggressively against the armored rear bumper.
I swerved wildly onto the dark, unlit rural highway and disappeared entirely into the night.
I drove for ten miles before my racing heart finally began to slow down.
I reached into the center console of the SUV, searching for anything I could use to fight back.
My hand brushed against the cold, heavy steel of a loaded pistol.
Right beneath the gun was a thick, manila folder sealed with red tape.
I grabbed the folder, turned on the overhead dome light, and tore it open with my teeth.
It was a highly classified federal dossier containing hundreds of surveillance photographs and financial records.
I flipped to the very first page of the terrifying document.

The bold, black letters at the top of the page did not say Daniel's name.
The massive, multi-million dollar criminal enterprise was registered entirely under the name Rachel Carter.
