Chapter 6 - The Dead End

I stared at the police officers in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.
Daniel was not dead.
He had orchestrated this entire nightmare and somehow framed me for his own fake murder.
"You do not understand, my husband is alive!" I screamed desperately through the open window.
The lead officer marched aggressively toward my car, pointing his gun directly at my chest.
"Turn off the engine and step out of the vehicle right now," he barked, ignoring my pleas completely.
If I surrendered to them, Noah would die in the passenger seat before an ambulance ever arrived.
I made the most terrifying decision of my entire life.
I threw the transmission into reverse and slammed my foot down on the gas pedal.
The heavy sedan shot backward, spinning wildly on the wet asphalt.
Gunshots rang out in the dark night.
A bullet shattered the rear windshield, showering the back seat in thousands of tiny glass diamonds.
I threw the car into drive and launched it aggressively over the neighborhood curb.
I drove blindly through a manicured public park, destroying fences and tearing up the wet grass.
I merged onto the dark interstate, leaving the chaotic police sirens fading in the distance.
My stolen phone suddenly buzzed in the cup holder with an incoming video call.
It was from my older sister, Sarah.
I swiped the screen to answer, desperately hoping she could help me.
"Sarah, thank God," I cried, keeping my eyes glued to the dark highway.
Sarah was sobbing uncontrollably on the video screen.
"Rachel, please come to the downtown hospital right now," Sarah begged.
"I have a doctor waiting to save Noah, just hurry."
I felt a massive wave of relief wash over my exhausted body.
Then, the video feed violently glitched for a fraction of a second.
The camera angle shifted slightly, revealing the dark reflection in the hospital window behind Sarah.

Standing perfectly still in the reflection was Daniel.
He was holding a silver revolver directly against the back of my sister's head.
