Chapter 8 - The Mercenary Assault

I stared at the television screen in absolute horror.
They had somehow tracked my exact location despite me throwing the phone away.
"You have to leave right now, Rachel," Elias said firmly, tossing me a heavy canvas medical bag.
"I am not leaving my son," I argued fiercely, rushing over to the kitchen table to protect Noah.
Elias grabbed my shoulders and forced me to look directly into his eyes.
"If the SWAT team breaches this cabin, they will shoot you on sight," Elias warned me.
"I will tell them the boy was dropped off here, and I will keep him completely safe."
The sound of heavy tires crunching aggressively on the gravel driveway outside echoed through the cabin.
I looked out the front window and expected to see marked police cruisers and flashing lights.
There were no police cars.
Four massive, unmarked black SUVs had formed a perimeter around the property.
Dozens of heavily armed men wearing dark tactical gear stepped out of the vehicles.
They were not carrying police shields or wearing official badges.
They were private military mercenaries, and Daniel was walking confidently right at the front of the pack.
"Those are not cops," Elias realized, quickly grabbing his loaded hunting rifle from the table.
"Get out through the back window and run into the cornfield, Rachel."
"I will hold them off for as long as I can."
I kissed Noah's warm forehead, tears streaming freely down my dirty face.
I promised him I would come back for him.
I squeezed through the small bathroom window and dropped silently into the wet mud outside.
I crawled quickly into the towering stalks of the dark cornfield.
I heard the heavy wooden front door of the cabin get kicked completely off its hinges.

"Where is my wife, old man?" Daniel's voice roared angrily into the quiet country night.
A deafening gunshot echoed violently from inside the small cabin.
