Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I drove aimlessly for two hours, completely losing any pursuing vehicles in the dark night.
I realized Daniel had perfectly framed me as the mastermind behind his entire criminal syndicate.
I knew the local police force was completely corrupted and working directly for my husband.
I pulled into the brightly lit parking lot of a regional FBI field office in the heart of the city.
I walked boldly through the sliding glass front doors, completely ignoring the shocked security guards.
I placed the loaded pistol and the classified dossier firmly onto the front reception counter.
"My name is Rachel Carter, and I need to speak to a senior agent immediately," I demanded loudly.
Within ten minutes, I was sitting in a secure interrogation room with two high-ranking federal agents.
I showed them the dashcam footage from the stolen SUV that clearly proved Daniel was leading a rogue mercenary team.
The agents immediately dispatched a massive federal hostage rescue team to the rural cabin to save Noah.
An hour later, the lead agent walked back into the interrogation room with a warm, comforting smile.
"Your son is completely safe, Rachel, and Daniel has been taken into federal custody," the agent announced.
I broke down in heavy tears of pure, unadulterated relief, burying my face in my hands.
The nightmare was finally over, and my beautiful boy was alive.
"We have a secure transport van waiting out back to reunite you with your son at the safe house," the agent said kindly.
I followed him out to the loading dock and eagerly climbed into the back of the heavily armored van.
The heavy steel doors slammed shut, and the electronic locks engaged with a loud, final click.
I sat on the metal bench, breathing freely for the first time since dinner.
The driver slowly turned around from the front seat, casually removing their dark FBI cap.
It was my older sister, Sarah, smiling a cold, terrifyingly calculated smile.

"Daniel always was a sloppy amateur, Rachel," she whispered, shifting the van into gear.
"But do not worry, little sister, because I always finish the job."
