Chapter 5 - The Stolen Escape

I stared down the barrel of Mark's suppressed pistol.

The man who had brought us cookies every Christmas was now preparing to murder me for a paycheck.

"Mark, please, he is just a little boy," I begged, taking a slow step backward.

"It is nothing personal, Rachel, it is just retirement money," Mark replied coldly.

He raised the gun to eye level and placed his finger on the trigger.

I did not wait for him to pull it.

I grabbed the heavy brass lamp sitting on the end table and hurled it violently at his head.

The heavy brass base struck him squarely in the temple with a sickening crunch.

Mark collapsed instantly onto the expensive living room rug, dropping his weapon.

I did not stop to check if he was breathing.

I snatched his car keys off the kitchen island.

I scooped Noah's paralyzed body into my aching arms and ran straight into Mark's attached garage.

His pristine black sedan was unlocked and waiting.

I strapped Noah safely into the passenger seat and climbed behind the steering wheel.

I hit the garage door opener, threw the car into reverse, and sped wildly out into the street.

I needed to reach the city hospital, which was exactly ten miles away.

I floored the accelerator, pushing the luxury car to eighty miles per hour through the residential streets.

Suddenly, bright police floodlights completely blinded me from the road ahead.

Three marked police cruisers had formed a solid barricade across the narrow suburban bridge.

I slammed on the brakes, the tires squealing loudly as the car skidded to a halt just inches from their bumpers.

I threw my hands out the window to surrender, crying tears of absolute relief.

"Thank God," I screamed. "My son is dying, please help me!"

Four police officers stepped out from behind their cruisers with their service weapons drawn and aimed at my head.

They did not look like men trying to rescue a desperate mother.

"Rachel Carter, step out of the vehicle with your hands up," the lead officer commanded over a bullhorn.

"You are under arrest for the brutal murder of your husband, Daniel Carter."
