Chapter 8 - The Legal Trap

I stared at the tiny red light on Richard's collar, my mind racing at a million miles an hour.
Why would the ruthless head of a criminal syndicate be wearing a federal wiretap?
Then, the final piece of Mark's brilliant puzzle suddenly clicked into place.
Mark had spent the last six months meeting secretly with his doctor, but he was also arranging something much bigger.
"You are wearing a wire," I said aloud, my voice steadying with sudden confidence.
Richard's arrogant smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated panic.
He tried to cover the blinking light with his hand, but it was far too late.
"Mark did not just arrange an organ donation," I declared, staring directly into Richard's terrified eyes.
"He contacted the FBI and traded all of the syndicate's financial secrets for federal protection."
Julian slowly lowered his hands, a massive grin spreading across his face as he realized what I was doing.
"Shut your mouth, you stupid waitress," Richard hissed, raising the gun again.
"Mark knew you would come for his voting rights the moment his father died," I continued, speaking loudly and clearly for the microphone.
"And he knew the only way to get a confession out of you was to force you into a desperate ultimatum."
I grabbed the proxy document and completely ripped it in half.
"I am not signing anything, Richard."
"You just confessed to murdering a helicopter crew, orchestrating kidnapping, and attempting a hostile corporate takeover."
Richard's face turned pale with absolute fury as he realized he had walked perfectly into his dead brother's trap.
"I will kill you all and burn this cabin to the ground!" Richard screamed, pulling the hammer back on his silver pistol.
Before he could pull the trigger, the windows of the cabin exploded inward in a shower of shattered glass.
Blinding spotlight beams cut through the darkness, illuminating the entire room.
"FBI! Drop your weapon and get on the ground!" a massive megaphone boomed from the woods.
Dozens of heavily armed tactical agents swarmed onto the porch, pointing laser sights directly at Richard's chest.
Richard dropped the gun, falling to his knees as he realized his empire was completely destroyed.
I collapsed back onto the pillows, hugging my crying baby as tears of absolute relief poured down my face.
Julian walked over and gently placed a protective hand on my shoulder.
"He actually did it," Julian whispered in pure awe.
May you like
But as the FBI agents rushed in to handcuff Richard, I saw a shadow moving slowly in the darkest corner of the room.
Victoria Sterling stepped out of the darkness, holding a hunting knife.
