Chapter 6 - The Delivery

The terrifying sound of tactical boots echoed off the wooden floorboards.
Julian instantly grabbed his hunting rifle and fired a shot, hitting the first intruder in the shoulder.
The man screamed and collapsed, but the other two immediately returned fire.
Wood splintered all around us as Julian ducked behind the heavy kitchen island for cover.
"Stay down, Sally!" Julian shouted over the deafening roar of gunfire.
Another massive contraction ripped through my body, forcing a primal scream from my lungs.
I was trapped in a bloody firefight, actively giving birth to the heir of a criminal empire.
Julian blindly fired two more shots, keeping the remaining attackers pinned down near the entrance.
"I cannot stop the baby!" I cried out, terrified that my child would be born into a warzone.
Julian threw his rifle down and crawled across the floor, completely ignoring the bullets flying overhead.
He reached the side of the bed and grabbed my hand with absolute fiercely protective strength.
"You are going to push on the next contraction, and I am going to catch her," Julian commanded.
"But they are going to kill us!" I sobbed hysterically.
"I will not let them touch my brother's child," Julian swore, his eyes burning with intense loyalty.
A terrifying wave of pressure hit me, and I bared my teeth, pushing with every ounce of strength I had left.
The sound of gunfire suddenly stopped, replaced by the heavy, ominous click of a weapon reloading.
"Push, Sally, now!" Julian encouraged me loudly.
I screamed into the darkness, squeezing my eyes shut until I saw stars.
Suddenly, a tiny, sharp cry pierced the chaotic air of the small cabin.
Julian quickly wrapped the tiny, fragile newborn in a warm, clean towel.
Tears streamed down my face as I heard my daughter cry for the very first time.
Julian gently placed her on my chest, kissing my forehead in a brief moment of triumph.
"She is absolutely perfect," he whispered.
Then, a cold, metallic voice echoed from the shattered doorway.
"How incredibly touching," the older brother, Richard, sneered as he stepped into the room.
May you like
Richard aimed a perfectly polished silver handgun directly at Julian's head.
"I will take the child now, Julian, or I will blow your brains all over the wall."
