Chapter 1 - The Hidden Truth

I stared at the white envelope trembling in the doctor's hand.
My name was written across the front in Mark's familiar, messy handwriting.
Dr. Evans looked around the empty hospital corridor with completely terrified eyes.
"He made me swear not to give this to you until his heart stopped beating," the doctor whispered.
I slowly reached out and took the envelope from his shaking fingers.
Tears immediately blurred my vision as I completely broke the seal.
I pulled out a single sheet of heavily folded notebook paper.
"My dearest Sally," the letter began.
"If you are reading this, my heart has finally given out."
"I promised I would never lie to you, but I have hidden a massive secret to keep you and our daughter safe."
"My real name is not Mark Davis."
"I am Marcus Sterling, the sole heir to the Sterling syndicate."
"My family is extremely powerful, and they have been hunting me for three years."
"My father is dying and desperately needs a rare genetic heart transplant to survive."
"His doctors secretly poisoned me over the last six months to harvest mine."
"That is the real reason I insisted on legally donating my organs to random strangers through the public registry."
"I had to make sure my father could never touch them."
"But now that I am dead, they will know exactly who you are."
"You must leave the hospital immediately, because they will come for my unborn baby."
I gasped for air, clutching my pregnant stomach in pure horror.
The man I had loved for three years had been murdered by his own family.
And all those private conversations with Dr. Evans were to orchestrate a legal blockade against his father.
I looked up at Dr. Evans, panic rising in my throat.
"We have to call the police," I sobbed, stepping backward.
Dr. Evans shook his head frantically, his face completely pale.
"The police work for them, Sally," he warned me.
Before I could process his words, the heavy elevator doors at the end of the hall violently burst open.
Five armed men in dark suits stepped out, walking in perfect unison.
They were followed by an elegant, terrifying older woman wearing diamonds.

"Lock the entire hospital down," the woman ordered coldly.
"Nobody leaves until I have my son's heart and my new grandchild."
