Chapter 2 - The Matriarch

I froze in the middle of the corridor as the armed men spread out.
Dr. Evans quickly stepped in front of me, trying to shield my pregnant body from their view.
The elegant older woman walked slowly toward us, the sharp click of her heels echoing off the linoleum floor.
She stopped a few feet away, her cold blue eyes assessing me with utter disgust.
"You must be the little waitress who ruined my son's life," she said smoothly.
"I am Victoria Sterling, Mark's mother."
I stared at her, seeing Mark's familiar cheekbones beneath her icy exterior.
"You poisoned him," I choked out, tears streaming down my face.
Victoria simply smiled, adjusting her expensive silk scarf.
"My husband is the founder of a billion-dollar empire, and he requires a matching donor."
"Mark was selfish to run away from his familial obligations."
"Now, hand over the donation withdrawal forms, and I will make sure you receive a very generous settlement."
I gripped Mark's letter tightly in my fist, refusing to back down.
"Mark already signed the legal release forms thirty minutes ago."
"His organs are in the federal registry now, and you cannot legally touch them."
Victoria let out a dry, mocking laugh that sent chills down my spine.
"Legality is just a word used by poor people to comfort themselves, my dear."
She snapped her fingers, and two of her massive guards grabbed Dr. Evans.
They slammed the doctor against the wall, pulling a weapon on him.
"Cancel the public donation, Doctor, and route the heart to my husband's surgical wing," Victoria commanded.
"If you refuse, I will shoot you in the head right here."
Dr. Evans looked at me with blood dripping down his face.
He let out a weak, desperate laugh.
"You are too late, Victoria," the doctor coughed.
"I rushed the surgery the moment Mark flatlined."
"His heart is already in a helicopter halfway to Chicago."
Victoria's face turned completely purple with absolute rage.
She turned to me, her eyes burning with a terrifying new agenda.
"If I cannot have my son's heart, I will take the next best source of his bloodline."

She pointed a long, manicured finger directly at my pregnant stomach.
"Put her in the car and prep her for an emergency cesarean section."
