Chapter 7 - The Unlikely Alliance

I completely froze, pressing my entire body against the cold stone wall to clearly hear the desperate, muffled voice.
The frantic whispering grew slightly louder, and I instantly recognized the terrified, trembling tone.
It was Julian, entirely trapped in the adjacent cell behind the thick, impenetrable fortress walls.
He frantically explained that my father's heavily armed men had ambushed him shortly after he blew up our mansion.
My father had violently tortured Julian for hours, completely breaking his arrogant spirit to force him to sign the corporate transfer documents.
Julian wept pathetically through the cold stone, desperately begging me to forgive him for the monstrous things he had done.
He claimed that my father was planning to secretly execute both of us the exact moment the massive financial transaction completely cleared the global banks.
I felt absolutely zero sympathy for the abusive monster weeping weakly on the other side of the wall.
But I knew with absolute, undeniable certainty that I could not possibly escape this heavily guarded compound completely alone.
I slowly tapped on the stone wall, quietly asking Julian if he knew any structural weaknesses in the underground bunker.
He eagerly whispered that the old ventilation shafts directly connecting our cells were incredibly wide and entirely unmonitored by the security cameras.
He promised that if I could successfully crawl through the dusty vent and unlock his electronic door from the inside, we could escape together.
I quickly grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the nightstand and aggressively pried the metal grating completely off the wall vent.
I squeezed my severely bruised body into the tight, claustrophobic metal shaft, completely ignoring the sharp pain flaring across my bandaged back.
I crawled slowly and silently through the thick darkness, terrified that a guard might suddenly hear the echoing metallic sounds.
After ten agonizing minutes, I finally reached the metal grating looking directly down into Julian's brightly lit holding cell.
Julian was heavily chained to a steel chair in the center of the room, his face completely covered in dark purple bruises and dried blood.
I kicked the metal grate completely out of the ceiling and dropped silently onto the hard concrete floor of his cell.
I rushed over to the electronic keypad securing the heavy door and quickly began bypassing the wiring, using skills my father had ironically taught me.
The heavy steel door clicked loudly and swung open, completely granting us direct access to the dimly lit security hallway.
Julian stood up slowly, repeatedly thanking me and swearing that he was a completely changed, deeply remorseful man.
We walked quietly down the long corridor, desperately hoping to find the main stairwell leading up to the surface.

Just as we reached the heavy exit door, Julian suddenly stopped walking and turned to face me with a cold, terrifying smile.
He casually reached into his pocket, pulled out a sharp, gleaming combat knife, and immediately drove the blade deeply into my side.
