Chapter 3 - The Shadow Protocol

I stared at the encrypted text message, my heart pounding a steady, dangerous rhythm against my ribs.
There was absolutely no way Julian could have escaped a highly secure federal transport vehicle without inside help.
Someone deep within the law enforcement agency was secretly working on his payroll.
I immediately locked the heavy wooden doors of the study and activated the mansion's secondary steel security shutters.
Thick metal plates violently slammed down over every single window, plunging the massive room into complete darkness.
I turned on a small desk lamp and quickly dialed the emergency contact number my father had given me years ago.
The line rang only once before a deep, mechanically altered voice answered on the other end.
I rapidly explained that Julian was completely loose and actively coming back to the estate to silence me permanently.
The distorted voice calmly instructed me to enter the hidden panic room located directly behind the grand library bookshelf.
I quickly grabbed a heavy bronze letter opener from the desk and rushed down the dark hallway toward the library.
Every shadow in the massive, empty mansion suddenly felt like a deadly, lurking threat.
I reached the library and violently pulled the specific leather-bound book that triggered the hidden mechanical switch.
The heavy wooden bookcase slowly creaked open, revealing a narrow, completely pitch-black passageway.
Just as I stepped inside the dark tunnel, a loud, violent crash echoed from the main entrance of the house.
Julian had returned, and he had brought a team of ruthless, heavily armed mercenaries with him.
I could hear his furious voice echoing through the grand foyer, ordering his men to tear the house apart until they found me.
I quickly pulled the heavy bookcase shut behind me, plunging myself into total, suffocating darkness.
I felt my way down the cold stone stairs until I reached the reinforced steel door of the underground panic room.
I punched in the highly complex biometric code, and the massive door hissed open to reveal a brightly lit, fully stocked survival bunker.
I stepped inside and locked the heavy deadbolt, finally letting out a long, shaky breath of pure relief.
I walked over to the bank of security monitors to observe Julian wildly destroying my beautiful home above me.

But my blood ran completely cold when I looked closely at the high-definition camera feed displaying the mansion's living room.
Julian was not angrily searching for me, he was calmly staring directly into the hidden camera lens, holding a massive explosive detonator.
