Chapter 4 - The Fire Below

Julian smiled wickedly into the security camera, completely aware that I was watching his every move from the underground bunker.

He casually pressed a button on a two-way radio, broadcasting his cold, arrogant voice directly into my secure panic room.

He laughed darkly and announced that he had secretly hired contractors to rig the entire foundation with military-grade explosives months ago.

He had always anticipated that a day might come when he would need to completely erase the estate and everything inside it.

My hands trembled as I desperately scanned the bunker's emergency control panel for any possible override switch.

Julian proudly declared that I had exactly three minutes to unlock the steel door and completely surrender, or he would bury me alive.

I knew with absolute certainty that surrendering to a man who had whipped me two hundred times would only result in a slower, more agonizing death.

I quickly opened a metal supply cabinet and pulled out a heavy tactical flashlight and a specialized gas mask.

My father had designed this specific bunker with a highly classified secondary escape tunnel leading directly into the city's ancient sewer system.

I forcefully ripped off the heavy metal grating located in the far corner of the floor, exposing a dark, damp vertical drop.

Julian's voice echoed through the speaker again, happily counting down the final sixty seconds of my life.

I strapped the heavy flashlight to my chest, completely ignoring the excruciating pain flaring across my torn back.

I climbed quickly down the rusty iron ladder, plunging deep into the freezing, foul-smelling darkness of the underground tunnels.

The moment my feet touched the wet concrete floor of the sewer, a massive, deafening explosion violently shook the earth above me.

The shockwave knocked me forcefully into the damp wall, completely stealing the breath from my lungs.

Thick dust and concrete debris rained down from the ceiling as the entire multi-million dollar mansion collapsed into a burning pile of rubble.

I coughed violently through the gas mask, blindly navigating the dark, twisting maze of the ancient water tunnels.

I walked for what felt like hours, my body completely exhausted and rapidly losing blood from the untreated lash wounds.

I finally saw a faint sliver of moonlight shining down through a heavy iron manhole cover in the distance.

I pushed the heavy iron disk aside with the last bit of my strength and climbed slowly out onto a deserted, rainy city street.

I collapsed onto the cold, wet pavement, genuinely believing I had finally escaped Julian's terrifying wrath.

A sleek, heavily armored black SUV suddenly rolled silently out of the shadows and stopped directly in front of my exhausted body.

The tinted window slowly rolled down, revealing Selene sitting in the passenger seat with a loaded gun pointed directly at my head.
