Chapter 5 - The Devil's Bargain

Selene stepped carefully out of the heavy armored vehicle, keeping the dark pistol aimed directly at my chest.
The freezing rain completely soaked her expensive designer dress, but her arrogant, confident smile remained perfectly intact.
She looked down at my bleeding, shivering body and laughed a cruel, deeply hollow laugh.
She proudly confessed that she had never actually planned to leave the country when I graciously gave her the chance.
She had secretly tracked Julian's encrypted communications and knew exactly where his underground escape tunnels led.
Selene wanted Julian completely out of the picture just as much as I did, but she also wanted the massive fortune all to herself.
She demanded that I immediately transfer all of my father's newly acquired corporate assets directly into her personal offshore accounts.
If I complied, she promised to shoot Julian and let me walk away completely free into the rainy night.
If I refused, she promised to shoot me right here in the street and completely blame Julian for the tragic murder.
I slowly pushed myself up into a sitting position on the wet asphalt, completely refusing to show her any fear.
I casually wiped the rain and blood from my face, looking her directly in her cold, greedy eyes.
I quietly informed her that my father's vast financial network required a highly specific biometric retinal scan for any major asset transfer.
She violently grabbed me by the hair, forcefully dragging me toward the open door of the black SUV.
She aggressively stated that she would simply take my entire head to the bank if that was what the security protocol truly required.
Suddenly, a massive, deafening gunshot completely shattered the quiet rhythm of the falling rain.
Selene screamed in pure agony as the heavy pistol was violently blasted entirely out of her trembling hand.
She collapsed onto the wet pavement, frantically clutching her shattered, bleeding wrist.
I quickly scrambled backward, looking desperately into the dark shadows to see who had just fired the precise shot.
A tall, broad-shouldered man slowly stepped out from behind a brick alleyway, casually lowering a heavy sniper rifle.
It was my father's highly trusted chief of security, a ruthless man named Marcus, who had secretly protected me since childhood.
Marcus quickly secured the weeping Selene with heavy zip-ties, completely ignoring her pathetic begging.
He gently helped me to my feet, wrapping a warm, dry coat carefully around my freezing shoulders.

I thanked him weakly, genuinely believing the terrifying nightmare of this long night was finally coming to an end.
Marcus looked at me with a deeply sorrowful expression and quietly apologized before forcefully injecting a powerful sedative directly into my neck.
