Chapter 9 - The Code of Silence

I stood completely frozen as Marcus pushed the barrel of his gun harder against my skull.

Garrett heard the commotion and looked over, a sick, victorious grin spreading across his face.

"Bring her out here, Marcus," Garrett ordered, stepping away from my battered father.

Marcus shoved me forward out of the shadows, forcing me into the dim light of the warehouse floor.

My father’s eyes widened in sheer terror as he saw me captured by our own head of security.

"Let her go, Garrett, this is strictly between you and me!" my father yelled, pulling desperately at his heavy ropes.

"Not anymore," Garrett laughed, pointing his silver pistol directly at my chest.

"Now you get to watch her die unless you transfer the money right this second."

My hands were shaking, but my mind was racing through the contents of the trauma kit strapped to my side.

I slowly raised my hands in a gesture of absolute surrender, pretending to beg for my life.

"Please, Garrett, just take the money and leave us alone," I sobbed convincingly.

As I raised my arms, my fingers brushed against the compact, high-voltage portable defibrillator in my medical pouch.

Garrett looked down at the glowing tablet, distracted for one fatal, crucial second.

I ripped the defibrillator pads from my belt, cranked the dial to maximum voltage, and violently slammed them against Marcus’s unprotected neck.

Marcus convulsed aggressively, dropping his weapon as a massive electrical shock sent him crashing to the concrete floor.

I dove smoothly into a roll, grabbing Marcus’s dropped gun just as Garrett started firing blindly in panic.

I aimed from the ground and pulled the trigger, sending a bullet straight through Garrett’s right kneecap.

He screamed in agonizing pain, collapsing onto the dirty floor and dropping his weapon.

Before the remaining mercenaries could even react, the warehouse doors were violently blown off their hinges.

Dozens of police officers swarmed into the building, heavily armed and shouting commands.

Walking confidently right behind the police captain was Melissa, holding her hands up in fake innocence.

"He held me hostage and forced me to help him!" Melissa cried loudly to the police, pointing an accusing finger at the bleeding Garrett.

To save herself from a massive corporate espionage sentence, the mistress had turned the police directly onto her fake husband.
