Chapter 4 - The Doctor's Betrayal

The iPad slipped from my shaking hands and crashed onto the carpeted floor.

My own husband had essentially murdered our five-year-old son for a corporate promotion and a payout.

I did not wait for my father to finish his screaming match in the boardroom.

I sprinted out of the glass building, hailed a yellow taxi, and gave the driver the address to Dr. Harris’s private medical clinic.

The rain poured down in sheets, matching the violent, chaotic storm raging inside my shattered heart.

I burst through the clinic doors, ignoring the protests of the terrified receptionist.

Dr. Harris was sitting in his lavish office, signing a stack of expensive pharmaceutical orders.

He looked up, his face turning entirely pale as I slammed the printed copies of the hidden emails onto his pristine desk.

"You sold my son's life for two million dollars," I screamed, the raw agony tearing through my throat.

The prestigious doctor quickly stood up and rushed to close his heavy oak office door.

"Claire, please calm down, you are taking those emails entirely out of context," he lied smoothly.

"There is no context that justifies withholding a life-saving trial from a dying child," I shot back, hitting the record button on my phone hidden in my pocket.

Dr. Harris sighed heavily, running a nervous hand over his perfectly styled hair.

"Garrett insisted that the trial was too risky, and he offered a generous donation to my research fund to keep it quiet," the doctor confessed in a hushed whisper.

"He said a sick child would drain his finances and ruin his new life with Melissa."

I felt the bile rise in my throat as the doctor casually admitted to being an accomplice to murder.

"You are going to lose your medical license, and you are both going to rot in prison," I promised fiercely.

I turned around to leave the office, ready to take the hidden recording straight to the police.

But a heavy, metallic click echoed through the quiet room.

Dr. Harris had just locked the reinforced electronic door from a hidden switch under his desk.

"I am very sorry, Claire, but I cannot let you leave with that information," the doctor said coldly.

He opened his bottom drawer and pulled out a heavy medical syringe filled with a clear, terrifying liquid.
