Chapter 5 - The Glass Cage

I backed away slowly, my eyes locked on the deadly syringe gleaming in the fluorescent office light.

"You really think you can murder me in your own clinic and get away with it?" I demanded, trying to keep the panic out of my voice.

Dr. Harris stepped closer, his expression completely devoid of human empathy.

"You are a grieving mother who just lost her only child," he said softly.

"Everyone will simply assume you suffered a tragic, self-inflicted overdose out of unbearable sorrow."

He lunged forward with surprising speed, attempting to plunge the heavy needle into my neck.

My ER training kicked in instantly, and I aggressively shoved his heavy oak desk right into his knees.

The doctor stumbled backward with a sharp cry of pain, dropping the deadly syringe onto the polished floor.

I grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the side table and swung it desperately at the reinforced glass window.

The glass spiderwebbed but refused to shatter completely.

"Security, get in here immediately!" Dr. Harris yelled through the internal intercom system.

I knew I only had seconds before his hired guards broke down the heavy electronic door.

I grabbed the heavy fire extinguisher mounted on the wall and smashed it against the weakened window with all my remaining strength.

The glass finally exploded outward in a massive shower of sharp, dangerous shards.

I climbed through the broken frame, ignoring the deep cuts on my hands, and dropped into the wet alleyway below.

I sprinted through the pouring rain, clutching my phone tightly to protect the precious audio recording.

I finally reached the safety of my father's fortified penthouse and collapsed onto the living room rug.

"I have the confession, Dad," I gasped, holding out my soaked phone.

My father quickly connected the device to his state-of-the-art computer system to extract the audio file.

But the screen immediately flashed red with a critical error message.

"The file is completely corrupted," my father said, his face falling in absolute despair.

"Garrett installed a military-grade digital jammer on your phone during the hospital visit to destroy any evidence you gathered."

I let out a sob of pure frustration, feeling like the walls were closing in on us.

"There is one other option," my father said, pulling up a schematic of Garrett's hotel suite.

"Garrett keeps all of his physical blackmail and paper trails in a biometric safe hidden behind his hotel mirror."

I wiped my face, realizing exactly what I had to do next.

"To open a biometric safe, we need his physical fingerprint," I said softly.

My father nodded grimly.

"And you are the only person who can get close enough to him to steal it."
