Chapter 1 - The Emergency Room

I gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned completely white from the immense pressure.

The city streetlights flashed by in a colorful blur as I aggressively sped through the dark intersections.

I completely ignored every single red light and stop sign in my desperate, terrifying race against time.

My six-year-old daughter was crying incredibly weakly in her secured car seat directly behind me.

Her tiny body was radiating a terrifying amount of heat from the highly dangerous, unexplained fever.

I could still feel the stinging, burning pain on my cheek where my own husband had violently slapped me.

Brian had actually struck me across the face just to appease his horrible, incredibly controlling mother.

He wanted me to serve dinner to their obnoxious guests instead of saving the life of my own child.

I reached for my phone on the illuminated dashboard with trembling, heavily shaking fingers.

I immediately dialed the one person in this entire world who would absolutely never let anyone hurt me.

My older brother Marcus was a former federal investigator and a highly ruthless corporate defense attorney.

He answered the frantic call before the second digital ring even had a chance to properly finish.

I sobbed uncontrollably into the speaker as I desperately explained everything that had just happened at the house.

Marcus promised me in a dark, icy tone that he was already on his way to the medical center.

He swore with a deadly calmness that Brian would deeply and permanently regret ever touching me.

I finally slammed on the brakes directly in front of the brightly lit emergency room entrance.

I threw my car door wide open and screamed at the absolute top of my lungs for a doctor.

A dedicated team of nurses rushed outside with a rolling stretcher to quickly grab my fragile daughter.

They swept Lily away through the heavy double doors before I could even properly process the chaotic moment.

I collapsed into a cheap plastic chair in the waiting room, completely paralyzed by raw, unadulterated fear.

About thirty agonizing minutes slowly passed before Marcus finally walked through the sliding glass front doors.

His expensive dark suit perfectly matched the deadly, incredibly serious expression on his handsome face.

He pulled me into a tight, comforting embrace and promised that our family would definitely survive this nightmare.

Suddenly, the lead pediatrician pushed through the swinging hospital doors and walked directly toward our location.

The doctor looked incredibly grim and nervously adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses before speaking to us.

He asked me if Lily had consumed anything highly unusual or strange during the late afternoon.

I frantically explained that my mother-in-law had forcefully made her drink a special, homemade herbal tea.

The doctor took a deep, shaky breath and delivered the most terrifying news of my entire life.

He stated firmly that my daughter was absolutely not suffering from any kind of natural viral infection.

The rapid toxicology screening clearly revealed that Lily had ingested a highly lethal dose of industrial rat poison.
