Chapter 2 - The Shattered Illusion

The silence in the dining room was entirely deafening.
Daniel stared blankly at the heavy dossier sitting on top of his expensive roast beef.
Elaine pressed a violently trembling hand against her favorite pearl necklace.
Brooke looked back and forth between me and the powerful billionaire standing casually in her grandparents' dining room.
"Two million dollars?" Daniel choked out, his voice cracking completely under the immense pressure.
Thomas rested his strong hands on the back of my chair, a silent but highly aggressive gesture of absolute protection.
"Your wife runs the absolute most elite private crisis management firm in the entire tri-state area," Thomas explained clearly to the stunned room.
"While you were busy complaining about her not having a real job, she was literally pulling my children out of an armed, abandoned warehouse."
I gently stroked Ava's soft hair as she clung tightly to my side.
I had meticulously kept my highly dangerous profession a strict secret from Daniel because he possessed an incredibly fragile ego and a notoriously big mouth.
I desperately needed absolute anonymity to safely negotiate with dangerous people, and Daniel only cared about country club status.
Walter finally found his voice and desperately tried to salvage his ruined retirement dinner party.
"Tom, please, let's discuss this privately in my quiet study," Walter pleaded nervously.
"There is absolutely nothing private to discuss with a terrible family that publicly disrespects a true hero," Thomas fired back fiercely.
Daniel stood up aggressively, his face flushing with a sickening mix of extreme embarrassment and sudden, undeniable greed.
"If my wife actually made that kind of massive money, that vast wealth legally belongs to our household," Daniel stated arrogantly.
"I have the absolute legal right to know exactly where those massive funds are currently being kept."
I slowly stood up, gently moving the innocent Whitaker children safely behind me.
"You have absolutely no right to anything of mine, Daniel," I said firmly, finally unleashing my true voice.
"I pay exactly half the mortgage and cover all of Brooke's expensive extracurricular activities while you completely waste your salary on expensive golf clubs."
Brooke's eyes widened in sheer shock at the horrifying realization that her father had been lying to her for years.
"Dad explicitly told me you completely refused to contribute a single dime to my college fund," Brooke whispered in pure disbelief.
I looked at my highly misguided stepdaughter with deep, genuine pity.
"Brooke, I completely and fully funded your entire college account over six months ago," I told her gently.
Daniel lunged forward aggressively, desperately trying to grab my arm to physically stop me from exposing his lies.
Thomas instantly stepped directly in between us, grabbing Daniel's wrist with terrifying, blinding speed.
"Touch her, and I will personally bankrupt your entire miserable bloodline by tomorrow morning," Thomas threatened in a deadly, low whisper.
Daniel violently ripped his arm away, desperately trying to save face in front of his wealthy, judgmental father.
"You absolutely cannot threaten me, Whitaker, because my firm just proudly secured the massive downtown zoning contract!" Daniel yelled desperately.

Thomas offered a incredibly cold, highly predatory smile that completely chilled the entire dining room.
"I actually bought your firm entirely this morning, Daniel, which means you are officially completely fired."
