Chapter 5 - The Escape Route

The silence in the penthouse was suffocating as Leo kept his weapon trained on me.
"Vincent trusts you," I whispered, trying to buy myself a few seconds.
"Vincent is a dead man walking," Leo sneered, stepping closer.
"The Romanos are taking over the city tonight, and your husband is leading the charge."
He reached out to grab my hair, completely underestimating the heavy fiberglass cast on my arm.
With a desperate scream, I swung my broken arm as hard as I could.
The rock-hard cast slammed into Leo's temple with a sickening crunch.
He stumbled backward, dropping his gun in pure shock.
I scrambled across the floor, grabbing the small pistol Vincent had given me.
Before Leo could recover, the elevator doors pinged and slid open.
Vincent stepped out, having realized the trap before leaving the building.
He did not ask questions when he saw Leo reaching for a concealed blade.
Vincent raised his weapon and fired two precise shots into Leo's chest.
The traitor collapsed to the floor, completely lifeless.
"We have to move," Vincent commanded, grabbing my good hand.
"The Romanos have breached the lobby, and they are coming up."
He dragged me toward a hidden panel in the library wall, revealing a dark service stairwell.
We rushed down the concrete steps, hearing the heavy boots of mercenaries swarming the floors above us.
"There is an underground maintenance tunnel that leads to the subway," Vincent explained.
We reached the basement, forcing open a rusted iron grate.
Just as we stepped into the damp, echoing tunnel, a red light began to flash on the wall.
