Chapter 10 - The Vow

The tension in the warehouse was absolute as Vincent aimed his weapon at my husband.
Mark hesitated, his thumb trembling on the metal pin of the grenade.
That fraction of a second was all the Mafia king needed.
Vincent fired a single, deafening shot.
The bullet struck Mark squarely between the eyes, dropping him instantly to the concrete floor.
Chloe screamed and dove out of the way as the grenade slipped from Mark's lifeless hand.
The pin snagged on his jacket, pulling free with a sharp metallic ping.
Without hesitation, Vincent rushed forward and kicked the explosive directly into an open sewer grate.
A muffled, heavy boom shook the ground beneath us, but the blast was completely contained underground.
The nightmare was finally over.
I ran to Chloe, wrapping my good arm around her as we both collapsed into tears of absolute relief.
Vincent stood watching us, his men quickly moving to secure the area and clean up the mess.
Three weeks later, I stood on the balcony of Vincent’s restored penthouse, watching the sunrise over New York.
My arm was healing nicely, and Chloe was safely enrolled in a heavily guarded university.
Vincent walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and pressing a soft kiss to my neck.
He had given me a new life, a life where I was protected, cherished, and unconditionally loved.
I leaned into his embrace, finally feeling true, unbreakable peace.
Later that afternoon, a courier delivered a mysterious wooden box addressed directly to me.
I opened it carefully, finding a faded photograph of my late mother standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the ruthless head of the Romano crime family.

A handwritten note was tucked behind the frame, carrying a message that made my blood run cold.
"Welcome back to the family, daughter."
