Chapter 7 - The Hostage

My sister Chloe was weeping uncontrollably, her wrists bound tightly to the rusted arms of the metal chair.
I screamed her name into the phone, but the cartel boss quickly muted the microphone on his end.
He casually walked into the frame and placed a heavy, silver handgun gently on Chloe’s trembling shoulder.
He unmuted the phone and told me that Julian had practically handed her over to them as a peace offering.
Julian had convinced the cartel that taking my sister hostage was the only way to force me to surrender the stolen money.
I felt a blinding, white-hot rage completely consume every ounce of fear in my body.
I told the cartel boss that I would return every single penny if he released Chloe entirely unharmed.
The boss agreed to the trade, but he set incredibly strict and terrifying conditions for the exchange.
He ordered me to bring the digital transfer keys to an abandoned industrial warehouse at the edge of the city.
He explicitly warned me that if I brought the police or the FBI, Chloe would die before I even walked through the doors.
The video feed cut out abruptly, leaving me staring at a black screen with tears streaming down my face.
My father placed a heavy hand on my shoulder and told me that we were not going to rely on the police.
He made a quick phone call to his former military unit, calling in a massive favor from his elite private security team.
We spent the next three hours planning a highly coordinated, incredibly dangerous tactical assault.
I transferred the cryptocurrency keys onto a single, encrypted USB flash drive and placed it in my jacket pocket.
We drove to the industrial district under the cover of absolute darkness, leaving our headlights completely off.
The massive warehouse loomed in the distance, surrounded by broken chain-link fences and rusted shipping containers.
My father and his elite sniper team moved silently into the shadows, taking elevated positions on the adjacent rooftops.
I walked alone through the heavy metal doors of the warehouse, holding my hands up to show I was unarmed.
The interior was illuminated by harsh halogen work lights, casting long, menacing shadows across the concrete floor.
The cartel boss was waiting in the center of the room, flanked by six heavily armed mercenaries.
Chloe was still tied to the chair, her face bruised and her eyes wide with sheer terror.
I pulled the flash drive from my pocket and demanded that he let her go immediately.

But as I stepped forward, a familiar, arrogant voice echoed from the dark catwalk above us.
Julian stepped into the light, holding a shotgun aimed directly at his own mother, Eleanor, who was tied to the railing.
