Chapter 3 - The Interrogation Room

The cold metal of the handcuffs bit into my wrists as the officers escorted me out of my own home.
I could see Julian smirking in the back of the other squad car as they drove us away.
My father yelled that he was calling his best defense attorneys immediately.
The ride to the downtown precinct was silent, terrifying, and endlessly long.
I was placed in a small, windowless interrogation room that smelled of stale coffee and bleach.
Detective Harrison entered the room a few minutes later and dropped a massive file on the metal table.
He asked me why a successful federal contractor would risk her career to steal three million dollars.
I took a deep breath and reminded him that I was a forensic accountant who hunted criminals for a living.
I explained that Julian had secretly taken out loans against my name to fund a lifestyle he could not afford.
The detective tapped the forged signature on the document and asked how I could explain it.
I told him that Julian had forced me to sign dozens of blank tax documents last year under the guise of an audit.
The detective leaned back in his chair, clearly unimpressed by my explanation.
He said that a domestic abuse allegation did not automatically clear me of international wire fraud.
I knew I needed to play my absolute best card right now to save my life.
I asked Detective Harrison to retrieve the secondary cell phone from my confiscated duffel bag.
I gave him the complex passcode and told him to open the encrypted folder labeled TAX RECEIPTS.
The detective frowned, but he opened the folder and began scrolling through the hidden files.
His eyes widened as he saw the original digital copies of Julian’s forged applications.
He listened to the audio recordings of Julian and Eleanor explicitly planning to frame me for the stolen money.
I showed him the IP address logs that proved the offshore transfers originated from Julian’s office computer.
The detective realized that I had meticulously documented every single step of my husband's betrayal.
He looked up from the phone and apologized for doubting my story.
He promised to release me immediately and transfer the fraud charges completely onto Julian.
I felt a massive wave of relief wash over me, believing the nightmare was finally ending.
But the detective’s radio suddenly crackled with an urgent message from the precinct captain.
The captain ordered Detective Harrison to hold me in custody because the situation had just escalated into a federal crisis.
The detective listened to his earpiece, his face turning completely pale as he looked at me.

He whispered that the three million dollars Julian stole did not belong to a bank.
The stolen money belonged to one of the most violent drug cartels operating in North America.
