Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

Brilliant flashing red and blue lights instantly flooded the entire lumber yard from every conceivable direction.
These were absolutely not the local, easily corrupted cops from our small, quiet suburban town.
This was the heavily armed State Police SWAT team, dressed in tactical gear and moving in absolute, terrifying synchronization.
I had secretly forwarded the horrific video and the mob boss's burner phone number to a federal domestic terrorism tip line right before we arrived.
"Drop your weapons and get on the ground immediately!" a booming voice commanded over a massive, vehicle-mounted megaphone.
The criminal loan sharks quickly realized they were entirely outgunned and immediately threw their pipes and handguns into the cold dirt.
The furious mob boss cursed loudly, dropping to his knees and interlocking his fingers behind his head in surrender.
My mother-in-law shrieked in absolute terror, diving pathetically beneath the truck to hide like a total coward.
But my desperate husband did not surrender to the authorities.
His wild eyes darted frantically around the illuminated yard, realizing his entire elaborate life of lies was permanently collapsing around him.
He looked directly at me, his handsome face twisting into an ugly expression of pure, unadulterated hatred.
Instead of getting on the ground, he turned rapidly and sprinted directly toward my sister's parked car.
"No!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, running after him as fast as my battered, bruised body would physically allow.
He viciously smashed the passenger side window with his bare elbow and reached his bloody arm inside the vehicle.
He forcibly unlocked the heavy door, ripped it open, and violently dragged my youngest daughter out by her hair.
She kicked and screamed endlessly, but he quickly pulled a small, sharp pocket knife and pressed it firmly against her delicate throat.
The entire SWAT team froze in place, their green laser sights instantly painting my husband's chest in glowing, deadly dots.
"Back up right now, or I will end her right here in the dirt!" he roared maniacally at the surrounding officers.
I stopped exactly ten feet away from him, my broken heart completely shattering into a million tiny pieces.
"Let her go right now, just take me instead!" I desperately begged, falling to my bruised knees in the sharp gravel.
My husband smiled his terrifying, empty smile, pressing the sharp steel blade just a little harder against her pale skin.

"You took my entire life away from me, so I am going to take yours," he whispered softly, his eyes completely insane.
A single, incredibly deafening gunshot suddenly rang out through the freezing, chaotic night air.
